What is Dhanteras How is it celebrated

Do you remember that time of the year when your parents would buy jewellery on Dhanteras (or probably silver utensils)? Yes, we are talking about Diwali.

Diwali is one festival which is celebrated in every part of the country no matter which religion you belong to. Bengali’s have Kali Puja, Sikha celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, etc.

But, as you grew up, you realised that Dhanteras was the real reason why all the jewellery or shopping happened. As for Dhanteras, it marks the beginning of 5 days of Diwali celebration and merry making.
Dhanteras is also known as Dhana Trayodashi or Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi. On this day, Goddess Laxmi came from the ocean of milk because of the sea churning. Thus, this is why, on this day, Laxmi Puja is done along with Lord Kuber. Many communities like Marwadi and Gujrati also celebrate Laxmi Puja at Diwali.

Dhan means ‘wealth’ and Teras means 13th lunar day of Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar. The basic ideology for Dhanteras shopping is, if you buy dhan on Dhanteras, you will get it back in much higher amount. Gold, or metals in general, tend to have a higher re-sale value as compared to the buying value. That is why, Gold shopping for Dhanteras is a thing.

I have seen many people (for instance my mom) do their majority jewellery shopping on Dhanteras. Not only does it fulfil the requirement of buying gold on Dhanteras, but every jeweller (including Candere) have some interesting discount going on. For instance, you will find deals like 100% off on making, Discount on Gold coins, etc.

Since jewellery is much expensive as compared to any of our daily usage things, buying gold coin on Dhanteras is very common. That is why, you can see gold coins also have many offers going on.
